Samsung Engineering's main environmental goals are to increase our green management capabilities, work on eco-friendly project sites and encourage a culture of environmental awareness.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

Samsung Engineering is always looking for new, more innovative ways to achieve green efficiency and further reduce industrial impact on the environment. This commitment to sustainability is reflected at every stage of the EPC process.

During pre-commissioning, Samsung Engineering conducts a feasibility study to identify site-specific environmental impact control points. Building on that analysis, the engineering design team then looks for opportunities to streamline energy use and reduce pollutant output. The procurement team takes the design team’s component list and identifies the suppliers who produce the greenest products, and then the transportation team works to optimize delivery schedules and logistics to minimize carbon emissions. On the jobsite, the project team creates a construction environment management plan (CEMP) to maximize resource efficiency, minimize the release of pollutants and preserve local biodiversity. Once the plant has been transferred to the client, its real-time environmental monitoring systems and efficient industrial components allow the client to operate the plant while minimizing its impact on the environment, reducing energy, water and chemical consumption in the process.

Although we follow strict internal policies regarding environmental preservation, we also abide by internationally recognized, third-party regulatory guidelines. In 1996, Samsung Engineering first earned the ISO 14001 certification, a stringent environmental certification that has since been offered to many of our regional offices around the globe. In 2011, we decided to revamp our green management system in order to earn the KS I 7001 certification, which includes standards for energy efficiency, greenhouse gas, and social responsibility in addition to the core standards of ISO 14001.

SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE SYSTEM

Samsung Engineering's Sustainable Environmental Initiative System (SEIS) is an internal three-part proprietary environmental monitoring system—EMS, GMS and GPI—that collects data from each of our project sites every month. The Environmental Management System (EMS) enables planning, site management, and monitoring in accordance with ISO 14001. The Greenhouse Gas Management System (GMS) measures and tracks emissions, and the Green Performance Indicator (GPI) allows Samsung Engineering to analyze environmental performance statistics.

ENVIRONMENTALLY HAZARDOUS WORK PERMIT SYSTEM

In order to minimize environmental hazards, Samsung Engineering has implemented a project permit system, which requires construction plans to be checked for potential environmental risk factors. For any project found to require an environmental mitigation plan, a work permit is issued. Those environmentally sensitive projects are then monitored throughout the construction process by inspectors who visit each job site to verify that the construction team is adhering to the limitations and requirements of the permits.

WASTE AND HAZARDOUS MATERIAL MANAGEMENT

Samsung Engineering applies the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principle to minimize the environmental effect brought on by waste materials produced from our construction sites. We constantly monitor our project sites to make sure our waste management plans are being carried out effectively and performance targets are being met. We also collect data on environmental “near misses” that take place at project sites and share these findings with other sites so that similar near misses do not transpire again.

RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Samsung Engineering’s response to climate change has included annual assessments of climate change related risks as well as greenhouse gas reduction campaigns to minimize emissions while maximizing performance.

Samsung Engineering has relied on its internal system to monitor its Greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions from its head office building and construction sites at home and abroad since 2010, and has been making consistent efforts to reduce these emissions. Thanks to our diverse programs, such as training of employees and subcontractors on lowering GHG emissions(Scope 1,2&3) are constantly decreasing.

  • CO2 produced from combustion gas during the ammonia process is captured and utilized as a fuel for the urea process.
  • Processes 240t of CO2 a day.

RESPONSE TO WATER SCARCITY & BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION

Samsung Engineering is a total water treatment solution provider, ranging from wastewater and sewage treatment to deionization. We respond to water shortages and new regulations on total pollutant loads by developing technologies to reduce industrial water consumption and wastewater generation.

Additionally, a great deal of attention has been paid to maintaining biodiversity. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) said in a UN report that, due to climate change, 17,291 endangered species are at serious risk. To protect wildlife, Samsung Engineering fulfills all reporting requirement prior to the start of construction and follows all relevant protection guidelines throughout project execution.

ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING PROGRAMS

We educate all of our employees on the threats faced by the environment by increasing environmental awareness within the organization. By doing this, we have greatly enhanced our green management capabilities because now our workforce is committed to the project of environmental preservation.

Online Eco-Training

For all the employees, the Online Eco-Training Program educates employees on the importance of environmental preservation and encourages a pro-environment mentality within Samsung Engineering.

Dispatch Training

Before employees are dispatched to their jobsites, they receive online / offline classes on environment protection. The classes include environmental laws & regulations, clients’ requirements, and Samsung Engineering’s guidelines.

Environmental Management System Training

Samsung Engineering provides programs to introduce ISO 14001 standards and also train professional auditors for internal and external audits. It enables us to fully comply with the ISO 14001 and guarantee high level of environmental management.

CERTIFICATION

Samsung Engineering meets or exceeds global standards and guidelines for environment protection and preservation. As a means to improve the overall quality of environmental performance, we have used third-party verification organizations to check our green management system.
